Side effects of drinking

Most alcoholics start out drinking at a young age, long before they experience the side effects of drinking. Peer pressure encourages them to participate in drinking at parties, but they soon find that they don't need the peer pressure to continue. They like drinking, and getting drunk on a weekend, or even in the middle of the week, is perfectly acceptable to them. On lunch hours they will have a few drinks while they eat. They won't appear intoxicated when they return to work, but their job performance will decline. Over months or years, they won't notice, but their co-workers will not fail to notice the change in personality and work habits. Job performance that was formerly excellent will be affected. Intoxicated workers make mistakes, resulting in lost productivity and clients.

There are short term and longer term side effects when it comes to excessive drinking of alcohol. Short term side effects include dizziness, incoherence, loss of equilibrium, and affected job performance, which has already been touched upon. The long term side effects include permanent mood swings, bouts of anger, and physical and emotional abuse of family and friends. This abuse will damage relationships. A drunken person might yell at a child, or even hit them, causing injury and requiring medical attention.

While driving the child to the hospital, the inebriated adult can be stopped and cited for driving under the influence. He'll lose his license if he is a repeat offender. When the hospital investigates and find out that a child or spouse has been physically assaulted, they'll call the police, who will arrest him and put him in jail. At a court hearing, he'll be unable to explain his uncontrolled behavior, and the judge will sentence him to 90 days in jail, or at least long enough for him to sleep it off. His car insurance will certainly go up after he gets a ticket for driving while under the influence. Violence to his spouse will increase and the alcoholic's life might spiral out of control.
